Defect Description

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2017 Honda CBR1000RR and CBR1000RR SP motorcycles. There may be a gap between the fuel tank cap seal and the fuel filler neck which can allow water to enter the fuel tank.

Safety Hazard / Consequence

If water enters the gas tank, the engine may stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Factory Remedy & Repair Action

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel tank cap. If water has gotten into the fuel tank, the affected components will be replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on December 22, 2017. Owners may contact 1-866-784-1870. Honda's number for this recall is KH7.

CRITICAL WORKSHOP PROCEDURE:
CRITICAL RECALL SAFETY COUNTERMEASURE (Recall 22V-061 / Service Bulletin MTB 17819). Extended 1st gear operation above 5,000 rpm causes exhaust radiant heat to melt the oil cooler outlet pipe. The heat guard installs directly between the #2/#3 header pipes and the oil lines.

CRITICAL WORKSHOP PROCEDURE:
CRITICAL RECALL INSPECTION (Recall 21V-249 / Bulletin KL9). Visually verify that the machined counterbores face OUTSIDE. The bolt head and nut MUST recess cleanly into the plate bores. If flat face is facing outside, plates were installed backwards at the factory and will bind and fracture.
