Prescribed Workshop Remediation Action

No mechanical intervention required. Inspect gap with wire-style feeler gauge and reinstall to factory torque specification.

Coil-on-Plug (COP) / Stick Coil Multimeter Bench Testing Protocol

Step 1 • Primary Circuit

Set DMM to lowest Ω range. Probe between Terminal 1 (+12V switched) and Terminal 2 (ECU trigger pin). Normal reading: 0.75 - 1.05 Ω at 20°C at 20°C.

Step 2 • Secondary Circuit

Set DMM to kΩ range. Probe between Terminal 1 and the high-voltage spark plug spring terminal inside the boot. Factory spec: 9.8 - 12.8 kΩ at 20°C at 20°C.

Step 3 • Dielectric Boot Inspection

Flex silicone boot under bright light. Check for pinholes, white powdery dielectric breakdown tracks, or hardened silicone causing high-voltage flashover to the cylinder head spark plug tube.

Defect Description

BMW North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 S 1000 RR motorcycles manufactured June 8, 2016, to November 16, 2016, and 2017 S 1000 R motorcycles manufactured on October 12, 2016. One of the bolts on the rear suspension deflection lever may loosen and adversely affect the handling of the motorcycle.

Safety Hazard / Consequence

If the bolt loosens and affects the motorcycle's handling, there may be an increased risk of a crash.

Factory Remedy & Repair Action

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the bolts and tighten them to the proper specifications, free of charge. The recall began February 17, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
