Route Overview & Character
Connecting Tellico Plains, Tennessee to Robbinsville, North Carolina, the Cherohala Skyway rises to elevations above 5,390 feet through the Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests. In contrast to the tight first-gear switchbacks of the nearby Tail of the Dragon, the Skyway features broad, flowing, sweeping third and fourth-gear curves.
Pavement Quality & Road Surface
Smooth Wide-Shoulder Mountain Asphalt with sweeping radius curves
Safety & Enforcement Advisory
High-elevation wind gusts along open ridges and sudden cloudbanks that drop visibility to under 50 feet. Slower sweeping turns than the Dragon, but higher speeds.
