Why Sag Is the Foundation of Motorcycle Handling

Before adjusting a single click of compression or rebound damping, your motorcycle's suspension must be mechanically calibrated for your total loaded riding weight (including full gear, helmet, boots, and armor). Setting Rider Sag ensures the suspension operates in the sweet spot of its stroke, preventing topping out over crests or bottoming out over potholes.

1. The 3 Crucial Sag Measurements

  • Measurement L1 (Fully Extended): Bike on front/rear stand with wheels completely unloaded off the ground. Measure distance from axle to a fixed point on the subframe.
  • Measurement L2 (Static Free Sag): Bike off stands, resting on its wheels under its own wet weight.
  • Measurement L3 (Rider Sag): Rider in full gear seated in active riding posture with feet on pegs, stabilized by an assistant.
