The Physics of Exhaust Scavenging vs. The Backpressure Myth
A common misconception among motorcyclists is that engines require "backpressure" to produce low-end torque. In mechanical engineering, backpressure is always parasitic resistance. What an engine actually requires is high exhaust gas velocity and tuned pressure wave reflection.
As the exhaust valve opens, a high-pressure sonic pulse travels down the primary header pipe. When this pulse reaches the merge collector, an expansion wave reflects back toward the cylinder as a low-pressure vacuum wave. If timed correctly to the valve overlap period, this vacuum wave literally sucks the remaining burned exhaust gases out of the combustion chamber while pulling in the fresh intake charge (a phenomenon known as Helmholtz scavenging).
