Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) vs. Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM)
Upgrading from a traditional lead-acid AGM battery to a modern Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery is one of the most effective ways to shave 6 to 10 lbs off your motorcycle's center of gravity while delivering significantly higher starting voltage.
The Cold-Weather Lithium Wake-Up Protocol
Unlike lead-acid batteries that lose cranking capacity as they discharge in the cold, Lithium LiFePO4 cells experience internal chemical resistance when cold. Drawing a light initial electrical load (such as turning on the motorcycle's headlight for 30 to 60 seconds) creates internal ionic movement, warming the cells and unlocking maximum cold cranking amps (CCA) for a fast start.
Diagnosing Parasitic Drain with a Multimeter
- Turn ignition switch completely OFF and remove the key.
- Disconnect the battery's negative (-) terminal lead.
- Set a digital multimeter to measure DC Milliamps (mA).
- Connect red multimeter probe to disconnected negative cable lead, and black probe to battery negative terminal.
- Normal Draw: Under 2.5 mA (powers instrument clock and ECU memory). If reading exceeds 5.0 mA, pull fuses individually to identify faulty accessories or shorted wiring.
