Harley-Davidson 3-Hole Oil Change Manual: Engine Sump, Primary Chaincase & 6-Speed Transmission

The Three Separate Lubrication Chambers of American Big Twins

Unlike metric sportbikes and cruisers that share a single unified engine and gearbox oil sump, Harley-Davidson Big Twin motorcycles (Evolution, Twin Cam 88/96/103/110, and Milwaukee-Eight 107/114/117/121) isolate their fluids into three distinct, dedicated compartments. Each chamber operates under completely different thermal, mechanical, and frictional environments, requiring dedicated fluid viscosities and additive chemistries:

  1. Engine Sump: Lubricates the crankshaft roller bearings, connecting rod knife-and-fork journals, camshaft lobes, hydraulic lifters, and cylinder walls while shedding extreme combustion heat (air/oil-cooled heads). Requires high-viscosity 20W-50 full synthetic or mineral V-Twin oil with high shear stability and anti-wear ZDDP (zinc/phosphorus) packages.
  2. Primary Chaincase: Houses the engine compensator assembly, double-row primary drive chain, and wet multi-plate diaphragm clutch. Requires specialized Harley-Davidson Formula+ or synthetic primary lubricant (80W-90). Critical: Never use motor oils containing molybdenum or energy-conserving friction modifiers in the primary—they impregnate the wet clutch friction plates and cause catastrophic clutch slip under acceleration.
  3. 6-Speed Cruise Drive Transmission: Lubricates heavy straight-cut and helical gears, shift drums, and mainshaft bearings operating under high sliding contact pressures. Requires heavy 75W-140 or 80W-140 full synthetic gear lubricant with extreme pressure (EP) additives that cushion dog-ring gear engagement and quiet 5th/6th gear whine.

Step-by-Step 3-Hole Workshop Procedure

1. Engine Oil Draining & Filter Replacement

Warm the engine to full operating temperature (180°F–200°F) so contaminants remain suspended in the oil. Place the bike securely on its jiffy stand or hydraulic workshop lift:

  • Locate the engine oil drain plug on the underside of the oil pan (5/8" hex socket or 1/4" Allen key depending on model year). Remove the plug and inspect the magnetic tip for metallic debris. Fine microscopic silt is normal; silver flakes or chunky tooth fragments indicate internal cam chest or rod bearing distress.
  • Position an oil drain trough under the front-mounted spin-on oil filter. Spin off the filter using an oil filter wrench or 17mm socket (HiFloFiltro RC series). Clean the filter mounting pad and inspect the threaded nipple.
  • Pre-fill the new oil filter approximately 1/3 full with fresh 20W-50 oil to minimize dry startup oil starvation. Coat the rubber sealing gasket with clean motor oil. Thread the filter on until the gasket contacts the engine base pad, then tighten exactly 1/2 to 3/4 turn further by hand (never overtighten with a wrench).
  • Install a new 11105 Viton O-ring onto the magnetic drain plug, apply a drop of clean oil or thread sealant, and torque to 14–21 ft-lb (19.0–28.5 Nm).
  • Pour in initial fill (typically 4.0 quarts for M8 Touring, 3.5 quarts for Softail). Start the engine, verify the oil pressure light turns off within 3 seconds, idle for 2 minutes, shut off, and check the dipstick on the jiffy stand.

    2. Primary Chaincase Servicing

The primary chaincase drain plug is positioned along the lower bottom edge of the outer primary cover:

    • Remove the drain plug (T40 or 5/8" hex). Allow the primary fluid to drain completely while cleaning the magnetic tip.
    • Remove the 5 outer primary clutch inspection cover bolts using a T27 Torx bit (ensure the bit is fully seated; using a T25 will strip the shallow bolt heads). Remove the derby cover and rubber disc gasket.
    • Install a fresh 11105 O-ring on the primary drain plug, thread in, and torque to 14–21 ft-lb.
    • With the motorcycle standing vertically level, pour fresh primary fluid (Formula+ or 80W-90 primary oil) through the derby cover opening until the fluid level just touches the bottom of the clutch diaphragm spring pack. For M8 Touring models, this is exactly 30 oz on refill (34 oz initial dry).
    • Install a new derby cover seal gasket (OEM # 25416-99C) and tighten the 5 bolts in a crisscross star pattern to 84–108 in-lb (9.5–12.2 Nm).

    3. 6-Speed Transmission Servicing

The transmission drain plug sits between the rear shocks on Softail models or on the right underside of the transmission case between the frame rails on Touring models:

    • Remove the transmission dipstick/fill plug located on the top right transmission cover (3/8" hex or T30).
    • Remove the bottom transmission drain plug (5/8" hex) and drain into a catch pan. Clean magnetic tip.
    • Reinstall the drain plug with a new 11105 Viton O-ring torqued to 14–21 ft-lb.
    • Pour in 28 oz (M8) or 32 oz (Twin Cam) of 75W-140 synthetic gear lube. Check dipstick level: wipe clean, screw dipstick completely down, remove, and verify oil level rests between the crosshatch add and full marks.
