What Actually Needs Lubrication on an O-Ring Chain?
A common misconception among riders is that chain lube is meant to lubricate the internal pin and bushing. In reality, the internal pin is sealed for life by the manufacturer behind nitrile O-rings or X-rings. External lubricant exists to prevent the O-rings from drying out and cracking, and to cushion the impact between the chain rollers and sprocket teeth.
